Outblaze abuse and IP class reallocation

We have sent the following announcement to our customers. We’re posting it here as well with the sensitive information removed.

Dear customers,

It has come to our attention that an IP class we use is blacklisted by Outblaze. This is a minor RBL, but seems to be used by mail.com, which is hosted in their network. The class is not listed at major RBLs like SpamHaus. In fact, Outblaze is the only RBL we found to be listing the class.

The class has been allocated to us just about a month ago. Needless to say that we do not tolerate spam and anyone sending spam will be immediately suspended. But our service and our customers have nothing to do with this listing, since it was black listed more than a year before the IP class was allocated to us.

Outblaze has black listed an entire /15 IP class (!) in March 2008. We have been trying to work with Outblaze for delisting our IP class, but they are not cooperating. Our IP addresses provider, jump.ro, has also tried to work this out with them but with no result.

This is an abuse from Outblaze for two reasons:

  1. They blacklisted 131072 IP addresses!, instead of listing single IP addresses or blocks of 255 IP addresses
  2. We obviously have nothing to do with this listing, but they refuse to delist our class.

For this reason we are changing the IP class XXX.XXX.XXX.* to class YYY.YYY.YYY.*. At this point we just want to gather feedback from you, our customers. Future emails will be sent to you when actions will be required from your side.

We will be using the the current IP class (XXX.XXX.XXX.*) and the new one (YYY.YYY.YYY.*.) together for one month, then the old class will no longer be available.

Here’s the purposed procedure:

(1) The new IP addresses will be added to your VPS and the old ones will be available as well for one month. For instance, if you have allocated on your VPS the IP addresses XXX.XXX.XXX.251 and XXX.XXX.XXX.252, this extra IP addresses will be added as well: YYY.YYY.YYY.251 and YYY.YYY.YYY.252. Note that the last numbers group in the IP address will be kept the same.

(2) You will have to update your name servers registered IPs at your domain provider, DNS records and any other reference pointing to the old IP addresses.

(3) After a week, we will remove the old IP addresses from your machine and wait another week to see if you report DNS issues.

(4) In one month, that is on August 16th 2009, the old IP class, XXX.XXX.XXX.*, will be permanently removed from our network.

Again, no action is required from your side at this moment. We’ll be waiting a few days for your feedback and after that you will be notified by email when we have performed step (1) and when is required that you perform step (2).

We want to ensure you that we are putting all our efforts to provide the best unmanaged VPS hosting service, including clean IP addresses for our honest customers.

Thank you for being our customer!
